 A Garden-Themed Junk Journal Made from Scraps and Treasures

There's something so satisfying about taking a collection of odds and ends and turning them into something beautiful. In my latest project, I've created a garden-themed junk journal using a mixture of paper scraps, card, lace, artwork, watercolours, and patched fabric. It's a celebration of creativity, recycling, and the joy of making something unique from materials that might otherwise have been forgotten.

As I worked on this journal, I wanted it to feel like wandering through a cottage garden on a sunny afternoon. Each page is filled with layers of texture and colour, from soft watercolour washes and delicate lace to fabric patches and little pockets waiting to hold notes, tags, and memories.

One of the things I love most about junk journaling is that there are no strict rules. A scrap of patterned paper, a piece of old card packaging, or a leftover fabric offcut can all find a place on the page. It's amazing how these simple materials come together to create something full of character and charm.

The journal is packed with handmade details and interactive elements, making it both beautiful to look at and fun to explore. Every page tells a small story, inspired by gardens, nature, and the beauty of handmade art.

The mindful maker: journaling prompts for embracing creative imperfections and growth.

 

 Sometimes the best part of creating is learning to love the little imperfections along the way. This week I’m embracing that idea and diving into Week 1 of the Hillside Heart prompts, which are all about mindful making, gentle creativity, and letting go of perfection.

In this video, I sit down with an old journal page and give it a new lease of life, using the prompts “Souldog” and “House/Home.” I really love how these words invite comfort, connection, and a sense of belonging. As I work, I let the page evolve naturally, turning what might once have felt like “mistakes” into design features and happy accidents. A few layers here, a pocket there, and suddenly something worn and forgotten becomes something useful, pretty, and full of heart.

Junk journaling and mixed media art are such wonderful ways to explore creativity without pressure. There’s no right or wrong — just playing, experimenting, and enjoying the process. Each page tells a little story, and each layer adds character, even the unexpected ones.

I recently came across a 50-year-old craft and art magazine, filled with vintage inspiration for sewing, knitting, embroidery, paper crafts, and more… and I couldn’t wait to flip through it with you.

In this video, we take a gentle stroll back in time, page by page, exploring patterns, ideas, and illustrations that are classic yet timeless. There’s a warmth to these older magazines that feels comforting — like crafting with a cup of tea beside you on a rainy afternoon. The colours, the style, the projects… it all has such personality.

Prompts for junk journaling.

 

I’m a little behind and decided to completely embrace it by going out of order — because honestly, that’s half the fun of creative journaling! This time I’m jumping straight to Week 52 of the Hillside Heart prompts, and the prompts were Door and Tea… which felt like such a warm, comforting combination.

In this video, you can watch as I take an old, ordinary page and turn it into a pretty and practical junk journal spread, complete with pockets and layers. I love how junk journaling lets you slow down and enjoy the process — adding bits of paper, texture, and details until the page feels just right. Doors always make me think of stories and possibilities, and tea brings that cosy, take-a-breath feeling we all need now and then.

Nothing fancy here, just using what I have and letting the page evolve naturally. It’s all about making something useful and beautiful from scraps, and not worrying about doing things “the right way.”

I’m kicking things off by giving an old diary a brand-new life, and honestly, this was such a fun way to start the year.

In this week’s project, I’m reusing and repurposing an old diary and transforming it using everyday materials — things like junk mail flyers, scrap paper, and bits that would usually get thrown away. It’s a gentle reminder that you really don’t need fancy supplies to make something meaningful. Sometimes the best creative moments come from working with what’s already around you.

There’s something very satisfying about turning something old and forgotten into something useful and personal again. Each page slowly changes as layers build up, textures appear, and the diary starts to feel like yours all over again. It’s creative, a little messy, and very relaxing.

A Year in Pages: An End-of-Year Junk Journal Flip-Through

 

As the year starts to wind down, I always love taking a moment to look back — and one of my favourite ways to do that is through end-of-year junk journal flip-throughs. There’s something really special about seeing all the art created throughout the year gathered together in one place. Each page holds a memory, a mood, or a little moment of creative joy.

Over the past year, I’ve filled my journals with layers of paper, scraps, textures, pockets, tags, lace, and fabric — all the little bits and bobs that slowly turned into meaningful pages. Some spreads were calm and gentle, others bold and playful, but every single one tells a story about where my creativity was at that time.

In this video, I’m flipping through my journal and revisiting the pages I created throughout the year. This OOAK Fantasy and Folklore junk journal has been such a joy to create. This one-of-a-kind journal is packed full of imagination, storytelling, and all those little details that make junk journaling so magical. 🌙 Whimsical & Magical Building a World from Scraps: My Fantasy & Folklore Junk Journal (Part 6)

This July I’ve been deep in #JJMadness — and I’m excited to share my newest creation: a fantasy & folklore junk journal, made completely from scrappy bits and bobs! 🌙🧚

Starting with a bunch of old pages, leftover papers, and random bits I’ve collected over time, I slowly shaped them into something magical. I layered textures, added torn vintage-looking pages, little pockets, tiny charms, and whimsical touches that whisper “mystery” and “story.” It feels like I’m building a little world on paper — one page at a time.

Watching the journal come together was such a gentle, joyful craft session. I let my imagination roam: maybe a fairy lives behind that pocket, or that ragged edge hides a secret letter from an ancient traveller. That’s the beauty of junk journaling — you don’t just make a pretty page, you make a universe.

A recycled, art-filled journal page, using prompts "Orange and Buttons "as a starting point.

 I know I'm a little out of chronological order but, Week 31 of the Hillside Heart Prompts gave us “Orange” and “Buttons,” and honestly, this combination was so much fun to play with. I grabbed an old page from my stash—nothing special, a bit dull and forgotten—and turned it into a bright, cheerful junk journal spread packed with colour, texture, and a couple of handy little pockets.

The orange theme brought such a warm, happy vibe to the whole page. I layered bits of paper, scraps, and embellishments until it started to glow with those lovely citrusy tones. And of course, adding buttons is always a joy—they bring that perfect touch of charm and whimsy. A few carefully placed ones ended up giving the page so much character.

I love how junk journaling lets you transform something plain into something beautiful and useful at the same time. The finished page feels lively, practical, and full of personality—exactly what I hoped for with these prompts.

Week 32 of the Hillside Heart Prompts brought us the words “Delight” and “Sunflowers,” and they were such lovely themes to work with. I took an old, plain page from my stash and transformed it into a bright, cheerful junk journal spread complete with pockets and little details tucked in. There’s something so satisfying about turning something simple into something that feels joyful and full of life.

Sunflowers always make me think of late summer warmth, and I tried to bring that feeling onto the page—soft yellows, warm tones, and little touches that make the whole thing feel sunny and uplifting. The pockets came together so nicely too, making the page not just pretty but genuinely useful. That’s one of my favourite parts about junk journaling: beauty and practicality all mixed together.

I had so much fun today turning an old, forgotten page into a really pretty junk journal spread using the prompts “Bubbles” and “Angels.” There’s something magical about taking a plain, slightly scruffy page and giving it a whole new life. I added pockets, layers, and little scraps I’d saved, and somehow it all came together into something both pretty and useful.

I love that about junk journaling—you never really know what it’s going to look like until the very end. A bit of paper here, a sticker there, some ink, some texture, and suddenly it transforms. This page turned out soft, whimsical, and a little dreamy, which is exactly what the prompts inspired.

Okay, I have to share this with you — I stumbled back into one of my favorite old pattern sites, Sticka till Barbie, and even though the original site is gone now, a lot of it still lives on through the Wayback Machine!

If you’ve never seen it before, it’s basically hundreds and hundreds of free knitted outfits for Barbie and other dolls. Everything from cute dresses to little sweaters, coats, hats, even some hilarious retro styles that just scream the 70s and 80s. And honestly… I love them for that. 😂

Why I’m obsessed:

• The patterns are free (we love that)

• They’re quick little projects — perfect stash busters

• And there’s just something so charming about the vintage style
